Geometry Challenge

 Geometry challenge

Using skewers and rubber bands we created a workshop which explored the creation of basic 3D structures mimicing the process we use to make our large bamboo installations. Influenced by Buckminster Fullers work with dymaxion design we show the kids how to use the basic building block of the triangle to make complex structures which can be used to create expanding shapes with a high tensile strength. We turned it into a game to see which group could use their structure to hold the most balls .After learning the basic shapes, they can be folded flat, stuck together or combined in multiples to create amazing structures. Once you understand the basics, you can apply the same techniques on a larger scale with long lengths of cane and bamboo.

This project can be used for teaching basic physics and maths on top of art and craft.
